According to Seneca the Elder, Ovid tended to the emotional, not the argumentative pole of rhetoric. His father wanted him to study rhetoric so that he might practice law. Along with his brother, who excelled at oratory, Ovid was educated in rhetoric in Rome under the teachers Arellius Fuscus and Porcius Latro. Ovid was born in the Paelignian town of Sulmo (modern-day Sulmona, in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo), in an Apennine valley east of Rome, to an important equestrian family, the gens Ovidia, on 20 March 43 BC – a significant year in Roman politics. 5/23/2023 0 Comments An ode to a fresh cut![]() That’s where it all begins.Ĭrown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut is a high-spirited, engaging salute to the beautiful, raw, assured humanity of black boys and how they see themselves when they approve of their reflections in the mirror. This rhythmic, read-aloud title is an unbridled celebration of the self-esteem, confidence, and swagger boys feel when they leave the barber’s chair-a tradition that places on their heads a figurative crown, beaming with jewels, that confirms their brilliance and worth and helps them not only love and accept themselves but also take a giant step toward caring how they present themselves to the world. That crisp yet subtle line makes boys sharper, more visible, more aware of every great thing that could happen to them when they look good: lesser grades turn into As girls take notice even a mother’s hug gets a little tighter. ![]() Boys go in as lumps of clay and, with princely robes draped around their shoulders, a dab of cool shaving cream on their foreheads, and a slow, steady cut, they become royalty. Slack canvas was announced at Dreamforce last September to provide a handy virtual pinboard for all those crucial information points and links that so easily get lost in streams of messages - text, video, documents, checklists, and embedded links to content and workflows from external sources and applications. The day that Salesforce starts rolling out Slack canvas to customers of the messaging platform is a good moment to take stock of how far collaborative documents have come - and where they're heading next. That being said, this book moves very, very slowly, as a function of how detailed Robert Jordan tends to be with his characters. I suppose what I’ve said sounds incredibly boring, but I love the politics and maneuvering and spying, all of the things that go into a fantasy minded political manifest. I tend to have troubles remembering the order all events happened (especially since I am reading all of the books in The Wheel of Time back to back in rapid fire fashion) so I went to the WoT Wiki to make sure I had everything straight in my head and even the plot summary read like a dry manifest of political discourse. ![]() I mean, the politics take place in a fantasy setting, but considering the reasons most read fantasy novels is to escape the slog and bureaucracy, I can see why this may be a problem for some. ![]() Far more politics than fantasy adventure, this book is incredibly important, but slow. ![]() ![]() ![]() Although his formal education ended there, he became a "student of life," selling newspapers on L.A. Even though most were written in the 1940s and 1950s, these 18 classic stories will be just as chillingly effective 50 years from now. Or "Zero Hour," in which invading aliens have discovered a most logical ally-our own children. Or "Kaleidoscope," a heartbreaking portrait of stranded astronauts about to reenter our atmosphere-without the benefit of a spaceship. ![]() ![]() What's even more remarkable, and increasingly disturbing, is that the illustrations are themselves magically alive, and each proceeds to unfold its own story, such as "The Veldt," wherein rowdy children take a game of virtual reality way over the edge. In an ingenious framework to open and close the book, Bradbury presents himself as a nameless narrator who meets the Illustrated Man-a wanderer whose entire body is a living canvas of exotic tattoos. Only his second collection (the first was Dark Carnival, later reworked into The October Country), it is a marvelous, if mostly dark, quilt of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. That The Illustrated Man has remained in print since being published in 1951 is fair testimony to the universal appeal of Ray Bradbury's work. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments The Swamp by Eric Bolling![]() ![]() From national political scandals to tempests in a teapot that blew up bribery, blackmail, bullying, and backroom deals that contradicted public policies cronyism that cost taxpayers hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars and personal conduct that can only be described as regrettable, The Swamp is a journey downriver through the bayous and marshes of Capitol Hill and Foggy Bottom.
